Univerzita má svoje pôsobisko prevažne v meste Aalborg a ďalšie kampusy sa nachádzajú v meste Esbjerg a v Kodani. Aalborg University bola založená v roku 1974 pod názvom Aalborg University Center, no v roku 1994 zmenila svoj názov na Aalborg University. Na základe počtu zapísaných študentov je Alborg University piatou najväčšou univerzitou v Dánsku. V súčasnej dobe má univerzita 21 600 študentov a približne 3 500 zamestnancov. V roku 2011 Aalborg University zaznamenala nárast o 31% čo sa týka počtu nových študentov.
“At Aalborg University we dare to be different” – takto znie motto univerzity vyjadrujúce snahu tejto inštitúcie pristupovať k otázke vzdelávania inovatívnym a pokrokovým spôsobom. Tento model vzdelávania zameraný na prepojenie teórie s praxou je medzinárodne uznávaný a známy ako “The Aalborg Experiment” alebo ako “The Aalborg Model”.
Univerzita je členom The European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). Táto Európska asociácia pokrokových univerzít združuje 12 inovatívnych univerzít ako sú:

Každodenný život na univerzite
Som nadšený z podmienok štúdia v Dánsku. Doslova to predčilo moje už aj tak vysoké očakávania. Na škole je veľmi veľa zahraničných študentov takže môžem spoznať aj iné kultúry. Študujem MBA a verím že po jej skončení si nájdem dobrú prácu.
